LAYOVER

In 1974, Gene White is a young man fresh out of college in Iowa, searching for something bigger than the life he has always known. When he lands a job with Braniff International Airways, he steps into a world unlike anything he could have imagined. Braniff isn't just an airline. It's a cultural phenomenon. With brilliantly colored aircraft, glamorous uniforms, eccentric personalities, and an ambitious vision of international travel, the company embodies the confidence and extravagance of the 1970s. For Gene, it's a ticket out of the ordinary and into a life of possibility. As he navigates demanding passengers, complicated relationships, colorful coworkers, and adventures in unfamiliar cities, Gene discovers that the airline's greatest attraction isn't the destinations. It's the people and the freedom to become someone new. Along the way, friendships deepen, romances unfold, and the boundaries between work, pleasure, and personal identity begin to blur. But beneath Braniff's glamorous exterior, trouble is brewing. Corporate ambition, economic pressures, and a rapidly changing aviation industry threaten the very world Gene has come to love. As the decade turns and the airline's fortunes decline, the carefree spirit that once seemed limitless begins to fade. Inspired by the real-life experiences of Gene White, LAYOVER is a character-driven period dramedy set against the rise and fall of one of America's most iconic airlines. Spanning 1974 to Braniff's collapse in 1982, the series explores youth, friendship, ambition, love, and the bittersweet realization that some of life's most extraordinary chapters are only temporary. It's a story about the places we go, the people we meet, and the lives we build between departures.
